FC Cincinnati head south to their Tennessee foes this weekend for an Eastern Conference clash in Music City. The Orange and Blue visit Nashville SC looking to play spoiler to the perfect home record their foes in gold own, and rise in the table against the current table leaders.
Kickoff is set for 8:30 p.m. ET on Apple TV from GEODIS Park. Ahead of this duel, let’s look at a few key stories to keep in mind as The Orange and Blue look to earn all three points on the road.
Full week payoff
After over a month of double match weeks and quick turnarounds, FC Cincinnati head into this match with a full week of training and preparation in their back pocket.
“I think guys forgot what the rhythm was like, and we changed it up a little bit just to work on a few things and change up some of the meeting spaces,” FC Cincinnati Pat Noonan said with a laugh when asked about finally having a full week between matches. “But it's nice to have it slow down a little bit and kind of take a step back and look at some things and trends and where we're at, good and bad.”
The month of games has been challenging but not without its positives. FC Cincinnati have, all while not training as a full group for a month, been trending in the right direction despite some painful setbacks at specific moments. That has made the opportunity to refresh and review after that stretch all the more valuable.
“It's been good to slow it down a little bit, but still plenty of things to talk about and try to improve ahead of an important game,” Noonan reiterated. “There are things that are trending in a positive direction, and things that we can get better at that we're addressing at this moment…we'll try to make sure that we get some of those things, I don't want to say right, but better, and then continue with some of the positives.”
Statement Game
Every match against Nashville SC has been a battle for FC Cincinnati, dating back to their first matchup back in 2020. The two sides, particularly since Pat Noonan arrived in 2022, have battled for positioning in the Eastern Conference and have played six one-goal games since then.
That said, this situation has never been present. FC Cincinnati head to Tennessee this weekend to take on a Nashville SC side that not only leads the Supporters’ Shield table as the top regular-season team so far this year with 49 points, but is also starting to run away from the field. The next-closest team to them in the table is nine points behind, and with the season moving towards its later stages, surely Nashville can begin to see its trophy dreams slowly coming closer to reality.
FC Cincinnati, though, are hardly scared of playing the league leaders in their home building, and feel this is an opportunity to make a statement.
“I just want to win,” FC Cincinnati goalkeeper Roman Celentano said of the match. “I'm tired of not winning games, and I feel like it'd be a statement winning away like that. So we’re going to give it all to get it done.”
Nashville SC are also the best team in MLS this season at home, with an undefeated 10-0-1 record in league play.
“We know it's going to be tough, and in a tough environment going down to Nashville,” Celentano added. “They're the best team in the league right now and they look every bit of it, so I'm just excited for the opportunity we have.”
FC Cincinnati are still very much competing for position in the table, currently sitting in sixth place but only three points out of a top-four spot – which represents a goal The Orange and Blue have set for themselves as a baseline for where they want to be entering the playoffs.
Since the restart of the season after the summer break, FCC are 3-1-2 in MLS matches and 5-2-2 across all competitions, clearly trending upward in results and performances. But after a disappointing home draw last weekend, and a tough test this weekend, a lot of that positivity or confidence can fade away quickly. Only furthering the internal desire for a statement victory on the road against the league leaders.
“We feel good. We’ve been playing well but just couldn't get the final result,” FC Cincinnati midfielder Gerardo ‘Dado’ Valenzuela said of the upcoming match. “But I think the team feels really good. Honestly, I feel confident and training's been intense. It's good motivation, playing the first team, because it would be a big three points. We can really make a statement of our quality against a good team.”
The Nashville Defense
Perhaps not in the true spirit of a headline, but the underlying truth about Nashville SC rests in its defense, even though a high-powered, star-filled attack may grab the ledes.
Yes, scoring has come easy to them this season, ranking third in the Eastern Conference in goals scored with 43 and a front three highlighted by captain and 2022 MLS MVP Hany Mukhtar, English forward and 2025 MLS Golden Boot runner-up Sam Surridge and newcomer to the squad in 2026, Christian Espinoza; the immediate thought of the difference maker in that group is that trio.
But it is NSC’s ability to keep other teams off the scoresheet that has made them truly great, allowing only 17 goals this season, making the defense the true star in Music City.
“ I think defensively they work. They make it difficult, which presents more transition moments because they're doing a good job of helping to create turnovers,” Noonan said of Nashville’s team defense contributing to their success. “They, I think, read the game well, understand spacing, transitions, duels, because when you watch them, there's moments where they understand how to move off the ball to gain an advantage. They understand how to compete for direct play and pick up and anticipate second balls. Where now, you have a real advantage with space to attack.”
A standout performer on defense for Nashville has been goalkeeper Brian Schwake, who is having a breakout season after joining the club in 2025. Schwake, a Chicago native and childhood friend of FC Cincinnati goalkeeper Roman Celentano, has posted 9 clean sheets this season and made 60 saves, earning a 2026 MLS All-Star selection for his efforts.
FC Cincinnati kick off against Nashville SC on Saturday night at GEODIS Park, with the action getting underway at 8:30 p.m. After this weekend, they return home to take on D.C. United at TQL Stadium on September 5.
