The final day of the 2026 MLS Regular Season has arrived, and plenty is still up for grabs as FC Cincinnati takes on the league's top team in the table. With their playoff spot already clinched, The Orange and Blue still need to affirm their seed in the postseason, and a win over the visiting Nashville SC would secure them a spot in Round One rather than the Wild Card round.
The matchup with Nashville kicks off at 4 p.m. on Saturday in a synchronized start across MLS. Ahead of that, let’s look at a few key factors FC Cincinnati will use to guide them to victory in this Decision Day battle.
Keep Focused
Decision Day is living up to its name this weekend as FC Cincinnati enter the final day with a lot still on the line and their playoff path still up in the air. But destiny is still in their hands, as a win would not only secure their place above the Wild Card round seeds, but could also help The Orange and Blue climb to the sixth seed.
On the other side of the pitch, Nashville SC comes to TQL Stadium looking for history. With 74 points, a win or draw would give them the MLS record for most points in a single season, so an FC Cincinnati victory would spoil their otherwise historic season.
But the focus has to remain on FC Cincinnati’s goals, not on whatever Nashville has on its plate going into the game.
“For me, we're trying to win a game to maintain a seven seed or jump to a six seed. That's pretty simple. That benefits us better than a play-in game. So, that's our motivation, and I don't think we need anything more than that,” FC Cincinnati Head Coach Pat Noonan said Thursday ahead of the match. “In the process, if that keeps them from getting a points record, so be it, that's not my concern. But they have something to play for, just like we do.”
To a similar effect, FC Cincinnati aren’t looking to the past for any sort of motivation either, as the belief is the first matchup between these sides, which was played in Nashville at the end of August, doesn’t have any realistic bearing on this game. Too much time has passed, and too much has changed for it to be relevant, so FCC are looking to focus on where each side is now.
“We didn't take too much from the last game. There were thoughts of things that we didn't do well, more on the defensive side of the ball, but more as talking points, not as video that we were looking at or showing the guys,” Noonan explained. “We just used the most recent games, but not just Nashville. Us as well and where we're at.”
Break through the Press
Nashville SC’s quality can be most easily boiled down to two central elements that make them a strong team. It’s obviously more nuanced in reality, but for simplicity's sake, two peaks stand out.
First is the triumvirate of offensive stars that leads them to success and makes them dangerous at any moment. Hany Mukhtar, Sam Surridge and Christian Espinoza all lead offensive categories this season for the Tennessee side and make them pop in the goal category.
But the defense has been what’s taken Nashville from a good team to a potentially record-setting one. Having allowed just 25 goals this season, NSC is hard to break down and harder to score on. The pressing connection the whole group has makes them united and hard to beat enough to really punish.
So to get a result Saturday, FC Cincinnati will have to handle that press as a team in a really strong way.
“I think, structurally, they're like most teams that are good against the ball. There's good connections,” FC Cincinnati Head Coach Pat Noonan said. “They close the space as well as the ball moves. I think because of how they attack at times, they can counter press in a really good way and eliminate being exposed in transition. And then when they have to defend deeper, I think they do a good job of getting that organization right and closing to the ball. So, you see two different aspects of how they defend that make them successful, and that stands out with the counter press moments, and then just the organization to then press the ball, which, depending on the opponent and how they want to press, can look different. But, they do a good job of limiting teams' ability to get in their box.”
Keep the Momentum
FC Cincinnati are riding their best high of the season after defeating Philadelphia last week and extending their unbeaten run to four games – with a 3-0-1 record in the process. The catalyst for this improvement has been defensive improvements and a more united squad in their effort to play tough.
Having allowed only three goals in their last four games, with two clean sheets in the process, their defensive improvements have come from all over the field, not just the back line and the keeper.
“I think the organization, how we initiate our press, I've talked a lot about it's not on the back line or goalkeeper in all these moments where we concede goals. How do we initiate a press? How are we tough to play against? How do we make it clear where we can create these pressing moments? Our players ahead of the back line are doing a much better job, in my mind, of being tougher to play against,” Noonan said of the improvements in his squad.
They have a big test in front of them this weekend with Nashville SC coming to town, as they rank second in the Eastern Conference in goals scored this season, but should FCC continue to improve in the defensive elements like they want to, they can enter the playoffs with their best foot forward and on a high note.
“Getting the organization right and the close connections better to be more specific about how we're stepping to the ball and what we're trying to eliminate,” Noonan added about where they need to keep improving. “I think that's why you see a couple shutouts. That's why you see less goals conceded.”
